Unit 4 Digital Imaging, Printing and Exhibition

  Digital Imaging, Printing and Exhibition

Task 1: Prepare and print photographic images AC 1.1, 2.1

When choosing the images for the exhibition I have decided that the first one will be to the liking of my classmates and the second one will have a personal meaning.

Both photos have been printed via theprintspace.co.uk.
When preparing an image for printing you will need the best resolution pixelation - no less than 300 dpi. The cropped image will still look quality but if a resolution is lower, for example, 72 dpi photo will not print well.

Full-frame cameras produce the best results for printing purposes.
The camera which I use is Canon EOS 700D with APS-C sensor, dimensions 22.3 x 14.9 mm.
I was not able to print images in very big format but A3 format was easily achievable.

‘Swing of joy’

Theprintspace.co.uk offers 2 types of printing paper:
  • Silver-based Digital C-type prints are archival photographic prints, letting you capture and preserve the beauty of your photography.
  • Giclée art printing service with a choice of 7 art papers from highly textured to smooth to glossy.

This image has been printed on  Hahnemühle Pearl paper, a safe satin option.

Hahnemüle Pearl has a smooth orange peel texture and a bright neutral white base, it creates really natural black and white images and offers vibrant colour reproduction and great detail too. The paper is resin coated with a fibrous feel. The satin finish of the resin coating gives depth to the image which combined with the texture and vibrant colour reproduction give the image the feel of an oil painting. This is one of the most suitable of the Giclée Art Paper range for mounting.

‘Swing of Joy’

The experience of the exhibition has taught me an important lesson. Most people are not drawn to great quality photography but to joyous images. My classmates have pointed out a few positives about this image:
  • composition - the subject is in the middle;
  • bright colours;
  • dynamicity - achieved thanks to shutter speed options;
  • made them smile :)

   ‘Sky has no limits, and neither should you'
                       Dedicated to my son Hadi

I have decided to print this image on Hahnemühle German Etching paper, which enhances the black background and contrast between colours.

This heavyweight paper has a slightly warm base tone and a strong mottled texture. It creates a print with strong colours and deep blacks that feel rich and high in contrast. This is due to the texture of the paper enabling it to hold more ink and capture the light. The German Etching is one of our heavier weight Giclée art printing papers. With its weight and strong texture this paper gives an artwork a handmade crafted feel. Hahnemüle German Etching is a robust Giclée paper, meaning it doesn’t tend to fray as much at the edges.

Task 2: Produce and asses photographic images AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Both portraits were looking better printed than in a digital form which is a success. The colours were vivid and the quality of the paper was phenomenal.

Unfortunately, the 2nd image behind the glass has lost the artistic flare and the matt texture of a high-quality print paper could not be admired.

Both my images have been presented with white frame, mount and description.
A mount is a great way to provide a level of 'breathing space' between the artwork and the frame itself.
A caption can totally change a view of the image and add meaning to it.
I wanted to capture the cheerful and cheeky personality of my youngest son, so the title of the first picture is: "Swing of Joy".
My older son has got anxiety disorder but his special interests - astronomy and aircraft- help him to socialise with peers. His dream is to be a pilot which is why the title of the second portrait is: ‘Sky has no limits, and neither should you' Dedicated to my son Hadi.

Task 3: Identify and use safe working practices within digital production facilities AC 3.1

The main concern is working a long time on a computer screen. We need regular breaks from the computer to give rest to our eyes and back.
Massaging your eyes, exercising them by looking at the distance
Make sure you are sitting on a comfortable chair - an ergonomic office chair is recommended.
